Day 1 of 365 (Art and Deena's Sabbatical Year abroad): Palm Springs to Calgary to Banff

June 30, 2022

"We shall not cease from exploration / And the end of all our exploring / Will be to arrive where we started / And know the place for the first time." - T. S. Eliot

Blog title (The Radical Sabbatical) credits to Thomas Gatlin. Thanks Tommy!

After a 90-minute drive and final goodbyes with our wonderful daughter Laurel, we arrived at the Palm Springs airport. I took the extra time before our flight to call my credit card companies and let them know of our upcoming travels. One of them asked for each country we'd be going to and I'm afraid I sparked some jealousy in the customer service rep as I rattled off the list of 20+ destinations 😲

Happily WestJet allowed us to take our backpack and carry-on suitcases on board (yay, no checked bags!) even though my backpack is so loaded up it couldn't even fit an additional sock. Arriving in Calgary was a smooth process and although we had religiously filled out the online ArriveCan app data ahead of time, they ushered us to their computer terminals to fill out all of the same information. No Covid tests needed either (good thing Covid's over 😉).

Although we wanted to taste our first Canadian food for lunch at the airport, the only thing open was a Subway :) The menus were in English and French so it still felt a bit international. I think Art got Canadian bacon on his, does that count? 😃

We took the 2-hour Banff transport bus and arrived at the beautiful Rimrock Hotel, did our rapid Covid tests (negative!), and got registered for the Renaissance Weekend conference. Big day of sessions and talks starting July 1 so we headed off for a well-deserved sleep!

Here are some quick pics from the day. Enjoy!
